Following the release of the Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer Khalifa on Thursday, the makers have unveiled the title of its second instalment as Khalifa 2 - The Legacy, with Mohanlal taking the lead role.
The announcement was made at a post-release event, where it was also revealed that Prithviraj, Tovino Thomas and Soubin Shahir will play pivotal roles in the sequel. Mohanlal plays Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, the grandfather of Prithviraj's character Mambarakkal Aamir Ali, who was unveiled towards the end of the first film. Soubin is also introduced as one of Ahmed Ali's trusted aides in the closing portions.
Tovino plays Iver Alexander, a character seemingly introduced as a hitman under Ahmed Ali’s wing in the tail end. The sequel, which will feature Prithviraj reprising his role as Aamir Ali, is expected to focus more on Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali and explore the family's history and the world of gold smuggling established in the first instalment.
At the announcement event, Mohanlal was asked if he had received any information about the story planned for the second instalment. The veteran actor responded humorously, "Honestly, I don't know." Jinu V Abraham, who produced and scripted the first film, is also penning the second instalment.
Khalifa, which hit theatres on August 20, is directed by Vysakh. The film traces Aamir's journey from running a textile business to becoming embroiled in the world of gold smuggling, while also introducing a larger family history centred on his grandfather.
