After being in custody for multiple days, including the polling day in the Kerala Assembly Elections, director Ranjith has been granted bail in the sexual harassment case. An Ernakulam magistrate court passed the order earlier this Friday. The latest development comes as Ranjith's legal representative filed a bail plea on his behalf.

An actress, who was working on a film with Ranjith at the time of the incident, made the sexual harassment accusation against him a few days ago. Police took immediate action, taking him into custody and conducting preliminary investigations into his alleged involvement in the case.

The opposition in the case objected to the bail request for the director, citing his failure to cooperate with the investigator during his three-day police custody. Still, L Usha, the Judicial First Class Magistrate, approved the filmmaker's bail request.

Earlier, an actress alleged that the director, also known for his roles in films, such as Ayyappanum Koshiyum, sexually assaulted her in a caravan. Ernakulam police registered an FIR on the basis of the actor's complaint against the filmmaker.

The director has been booked as per many different provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which include non-bailable offences under Section 74 (assault or criminal force to women with intent to outrage her modesty), Section 75 (sexual harassment) and Section 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).

At present, he is at the Sub Jail in Ernakulam. It is worth noting that this is not the first such allegation against him.
