Mammootty admits comedy is not his forte

Despite the megastar's candid admission, some of his comedy films are really memorable

It is rare to see a major star candidly admit to having a chink in his armour. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Mammootty said that comedy is not his strong suit. "I don't find any difficulty to do anything, but I find it difficult to make people laugh. I mean, comedy," said the superstar.

The actor went on to explain that he finds it challenging to pull of the brand of slapstick comedy that requires an actor to rely much on facial expressions and physical mannerisms. "Comedy does not suit my face, my gesticulations, sometimes it's very difficult," the megastar said.

The actor added that even if he does a comedy film, it would have a serious undertone. "People should feel it's a comedy. That's the only way I can do it," he added.

For years, banter (or so-called fan wars) between Mammootty's admirers and Mohanlal loyalists have been revolving around their respective 'weaknesses'. While Mohanlal fans argue that his counterpart is not as good as him in certain genres, such as comedy, the other faction claims that he is not as good as Mammootty when it comes to playing downright despicable villains or protagonists in historical epics.

Despite the megastar's candid admission, some of his comedy films are really memorable, such as Kottayam Kunjachan, Kalikkalam, Sangham, Thuruppugulan and Thommanum Makkalum, to name some. Even his other films with secondary comedic elements, such as Mayavi, Pokkiri Raja, Manu Uncle, Pranchiyettan and the Saint and Rajamanikyam, have the superstar acing comedy with ease.

He will next be seen in an important role in director Mahesh Narayanan's Patriot, co-starring Mohanlal, Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara, and Revathy, among others. Reuniting the two biggest stars of Malayalam cinema after a long time, the film is set for a May 01 release in theatres.
