The makers of Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros announced on Monday that the film has collected ₹59.50 crore worldwide in just four days. That means it crossed the ₹50 crore mark really fast, which is quite rare, especially for a film without big stars.
Directed by Savin S A and written by Vipin Das, the film appears to be riding purely on strong word of mouth. It had already opened well, with ₹10.5 crore on Day 1 worldwide, and then continued to grow over the next few days. Unsurprisingly, Kerala is where most of the numbers are coming from. The film has made around ₹27.45 crore in the state in four days, which is huge considering the kind of cast it has.
A big factor behind this response is Vaazha 2’s lead faces. Hashir, Alan, Vinayak and Ajin were already popular social media content creators even before the first film, and had briefly appeared in the first instalment Vaazha: Biopic of a Billion Boys. Their strong fanbase online seems to have translated into theatre footfall this time. In many ways, their pre-existing popularity has worked like star power, especially among younger viewers.
On Sunday alone, Vaazha 2 collected around ₹8.45 crore in Kerala, as per tracker What The Fuss. That is a big deal because it is the only non-Mohanlal Malayalam film to cross ₹8 crore in a single day in the state. The same tracker also pointed out that these social media talents have now joined a list usually dominated by stars like Mohanlal, Rajinikanth and Vijay when it comes to big single-day numbers. The second instalment also entered the list of top opening weekends in Kerala, alongside films like L2: Empuraan, Leo and KGF: Chapter 2.
What is noteworthy is that Vaazha 2 is not slowing down after the weekend. According to What The Fuss, early trends say its Monday collections could actually be higher than its opening day numbers, which almost never happens. Advance bookings for Monday were already around ₹3.5 crore in Kerala from tracked shows.
Even after that, bookings are holding strong. Tuesday pre-sales had already crossed around ₹1.5 crore by afternoon, even better than the first couple of days in some places, again as per What The Fuss.
Overseas numbers are also a big boost. Overseas numbers are also a big boost. As reported by Sacnilk.com, Vaazha 2 has made around ₹37 crore outside India in four days, with the Gulf playing a major role despite the ongoing tensions in West Asia. Because of that, the total worldwide number has gone well past ₹60 crore, matching what the makers announced. Another interesting point is that the film has already beaten the full lifetime collection of its first part in just three days. Sacnilk also noted that the film clicked mainly because of its youth connect, relatability, sequel advantage and the strong pull of its lead faces.
Right now, everything points to it becoming a much bigger hit. If this trend continues, Vaazha 2 should comfortably enter the ₹100 crore club worldwide. For a film led by content creators rather than traditional stars, that is kind of massive.
