Filmmaker Jeethu Joseph has confirmed that the script for the Mohanlal-starrer Drishyam 3, the highly anticipated final chapter of the hit franchise, is now complete. The director revealed in a recent conversation with film critic Baradwaj Rangan for Galatta Plus that the writing process was far from straightforward, involving multiple drafts before he was satisfied.
With Mohanlal set to return as Georgekutty, shooting is scheduled to begin this month. But Jeethu has urged audiences to be mindful of their expectations. “If people are expecting a heavy, intelligent game like part two, they might be disappointed,” he said. Unlike Drishyam 2, which drew viewers into Georgekutty’s elaborate cover-ups, the new instalment will take a different approach.
The filmmaker explained that the third part is intended as a natural continuation of the character’s journey rather than a puzzle-driven thriller. “I am happy with Drishyam 1 and 2, and Drishyam 3 is going to be a good film. I don’t know about the box office thing, but I approached the character growth organically, not considering Mohanlal as an actor, but I considered him as Georgekutty, and whatever changes can happen after four years, that’s where I am working on,” he said.
Recounting the pressures of balancing other projects while writing, Jeethu added: “I had a Europe trip in April, so while travelling, I wrote the screenplay, and on the Amsterdam to Dubai flight, I finished the scene order. After that, I came here, and I had this shoot of Valathu Vashathe Kallan, so every morning I woke up at 3:30, wrote two or three scenes, and that’s how you complete it. It was a pretty hectic thing.” Jeethu noted that it eventually took him five drafts to arrive at the final screenplay.
He went on to reveal that both his family and close collaborators, including his cinematographer and editor, gave feedback that shaped subsequent rewrites. “After the first half, I met them, I discussed, and then they read the second half. So once that process was done, they had some suggestions; there were some issues, so it’s always like that.”
Jeethu’s comments echo what he recently said at the Manorama News Conclave 2025, where he insisted that the third instalment of Drishyam would not be a conventional thriller. “Even if it fails, I wish to try something new apart from thrillers,” he said then.
Meanwhile, Jeethu is awaiting the release of his latest project, Mirage, starring Asif Ali and Aparna Balamurali, which is slated to hit theatres on September 19. He has also wrapped up shooting for Valathu Vashathe Kallan, led by Biju Menon and Joju George.
Further details about the release of Drishyam 3 are expected to be announced soon.
