Dulquer Salmaan, the producer of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, revealed in a recent interview about how they initially found no takers for the film's streaming rights. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, he said, "We went twice over the budget, and nobody wanted to buy the film. Tovi and I were there, but they were like, ‘You are barely there for a few minutes’."
Adding on how most OTT deals are finalised based on the screen time of major stars, the actor-producer said, "Their deal will be like, if you are there for many so minutes, we'll pay you X amount. I've been part of such films." He also playfully recounted one of his experiences when some of his scenes were removed from a film as his screen time exceeded what was agreed upon in the OTT deal.
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra was a major surprise at the box office, breaking several records to emerge as the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever, despite having no big names in the primary cast. Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen played the lead roles in the film directed by Dominic Arun. Unlike the norm, the film also enjoyed a steady theatrical run of over 2 months before it began streaming on JioHotstar. The streaming rights were acquired for a huge figure, reportedly, one of the highest for a Malayalam film.
Meanwhile, the makers have already commenced work on the second chapter, which, as confirmed earlier, will be centered on Tovino's character, Chaathan. Dulquer Salmaan and some other big names are also expected to be part of the film.
