John Abraham has expressed deep admiration for Malayalam cinema, praising its bold storytelling and realistic approach. Speaking in a conversation with The Indian Express, the Bollywood actor-producer described the Malayalam film industry as “very brave” and hailed it as the source of some of the finest films in India today.

John named veteran actor Mohanlal as his favourite actor “by light years,” while also expressing his admiration for Hollywood actor Meryl Streep. The Dostana actor further expressed respect for Mammootty’s portrayal of a gay politician in Kaathal - The Core, calling it a brave performance. “It’s brave for that man to do a film like that,” John said, underlining the importance of such roles in Indian cinema.

Kaathal - The Core explores the complexities of a politician grappling with his identity after it is revealed he is gay. The film addressed themes of acceptance and societal pressure, marking a significant moment in Malayalam cinema for its sensitive portrayal of LGBTQ+ issues. Upon its release, it received widespread critical acclaim for its nuanced storytelling and strong performances, with Mammootty’s portrayal earning particular praise for its depth and authenticity. The film, which emerged as a commercial success at the box office, is currently streaming on Prime Video.

John also shared plans to deepen his involvement in Malayalam cinema by setting up a writer’s room in Kerala, aiming to develop ideas for films that could appeal nationally or within the Malayalam audience. “I want to produce more Malayalam films because it’s the right time, they are fantastic,” he added, highlighting the industry’s creativity.

John will next be seen in Tehran, set to premiere directly on ZEE5 on August 14.
