Amid ongoing controversies in the Malayalam film industry, a group of prominent filmmakers has proposed forming a new body, the 'Progressive Filmmakers Association', led by director Aashiq Abu. The initiative seeks to reform the industry by fostering fairer and more equitable workplaces.

In an open letter, filmmakers Aashiq Abu, Anjali Menon, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Rajeev Ravi, Rima Kallingal, and Bineesh Chandra emphasised the importance of operating within the framework of ethical responsibility, systematic modernisation, and worker empowerment, which they believe are vital for a progressive society.

The letter urged the industry to align with modern systems, legal structures, and collective accountability. "Rooted in principles that prioritise equality, cooperation, and social justice, this association will ensure that the rights of everyone in the filmmaking community are safeguarded, while fostering collaboration to elevate the industry to the next level," it stated.

Aashiq had recently resigned from the FEFKA Directors' Union, citing the release of the Hema Committee Report and other recent developments as key factors in his decision.
