Asif Ali and Biju Menon's Thalavan ended with a cliffhanger, hinting at a sequel. At a special event in Kochi on Saturday, celebrating the Jis Joy directorial's success, the makers confirmed the upcoming instalment, titled Thalavan II. The announcement was made by actor-filmmaker Dileesh Pothan, who played the character of DYSP Udhayabanu in the film. Aside from the cast and crew, the event was graced by many prominent personalities, including actor Kunchacko Boban and filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery.

Thalavan revolved around CI Jayashankar (Biju) and SI Karthik (Asif), two police officers with a strained relationship. The plot thickens when a murder occurs, with Jayashankar being the prime suspect. Karthik is tasked with investigating the case, leading to a narrative filled with twists and turns. The film was released worldwide on May 24 and received generally positive reviews. It became one of Asif's biggest hits and enjoyed a theatrical run of over 50 days in Kerala.

Thalavan has reportedly been acquired by the streaming service SonyLIV for OTT distribution. An excerpt from the CE review of the film reads, "After failing with Innale Vare, it's safe to say Jis Joy's attempt to shift genres has considerably succeeded with Thalavan. While the film may not be an entirely gripping experience, it still is an engaging murder mystery."
