The film fetched mixed response during its theatrical run

After a rather lukewarm run in theatres, Aashiq Abu's Neelavelicham is now set for its digital premiere. The film will stream on Prime Video from May 23. Hitting screens amidst high expectations on April 20, the film met with largely mixed response. Though critics and serious cinephiles praised its technical values and lauded the attempt to recreate a classic, the film failed to resonate with the general audience.

Neelavelicham is the big-screen adaptation of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer's short story of the same name. The story was earlier adapted as Bhargavi Nilayam, a blockbuster for which Basheer also penned the screenplay. Hrishikesh Bhaskaran penned the additional screenplay for Aashiq Abu's version. It starred Rima Kallingal, Tovino Thomas, Roshan Mathew, and Shine Tom Chacko as the leads.
