The trailer of City Lights, directed by Vijay Kumar and starring Vinay Rajkumar and his daughter Monisha in the lead roles, was released by namma Shivarajkumar. The film, which is set to hit theatres across Karnataka on September 18, offers a glimpse into a raw underworld drama packed with crime, action and unexpected turns.
Going by the trailer, City Lights appears to be a quintessential Duniya Vijay film, with a gritty setting, intense characters and a blood-soaked underworld at its centre. Vinay Rajkumar, who has predominantly been seen in a chocolate-boy avatar, takes a complete departure from his earlier roles and sports a rugged look in the film. The actor is also seen wielding a machete for the first time, promising a full-fledged mass outing.
Speaking at the event, Shivarajkumar praised Vinay's performance and said the actor could now be associated with underworld films as well. “People often say that whenever they hear the term underworld films, they think of Shivanna. From now on, Vinay's name should also come to mind. I am not praising him simply because he is my brother's son. He has exceptional talent,” said Shivarajkumar.
The veteran actor also appreciated Vijay Kumar's journey as a filmmaker, pointing to films such as Salaga and Bheema and his efforts to provide a platform for new talent. Geetha Shivarajkumar, who was also present, said the trailer reminded her of the cult classic Om.
For Vinay Rajkumar, City Lights appears to have been a transformative experience. “The songs and trailer have already received a good response. After working on this film, I have developed even greater respect for everyone who struggles to build a life in a metropolitan city like Bengaluru,” he said.
The film also marks the acting debut of Monisha, Vijay's daughter. Taking on a significant role in her first film, she thanked her father for trusting her with the character and sought the same love and blessings from audiences that he has received over the years.
Another major attraction of City Lights is the return of veteran actor Umashree to the screen. Though currently active in politics, Umashree agreed to act in the film following Vijay's insistence. Speaking at the event, she praised Vinay's humility and commitment despite coming from a prominent film family. She also appreciated Vijay's attempt to portray the struggles of youngsters who come to Bengaluru hoping to build a life in the city.
Popular dialogue writer Masthi is also part of the cast, while several others, including Shivanna fan Puneeth, make appearances in the film. Charan Raj has composed the background score, with Shivasena handling the cinematography. With its raw setting, mass treatment and a new avatar for Vinay Rajkumar, Duniya Vijay's City Lights has already generated curiosity ahead of its September 18 theatrical release.
