Yash-starrer Toxic directed by Geetu Mohandas is showing signs of slowing down at the box office as the initial craze around the film appears to be fading with each passing day. After making a massive impact on its opening day, the film faced a tough first Monday, recording a sharp decline in collections. Toxic managed to collect only Rs 7.45 crore net in India on Monday from around 13,400 shows, with theatre occupancy dropping to 17%. The significant fall in both collections and occupancy has become a concern for the film’s makers and distributors, particularly after the strong start the movie enjoyed over its opening weekend.
Despite the Monday slowdown, Toxic has officially crossed the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide within six days. The film has earned Rs 221.55 crore net in India, while its India gross collection has reached Rs 264.80 crore. The overseas market has contributed Rs 39.25 crore, taking the film’s worldwide gross to Rs 304.05 crore. The film opened with an impressive Rs 101.10 crore net in India on its first day, but its collections have steadily declined through the weekdays.
According to Sacnilk’s reported figures, the Hindi version has emerged as the biggest contributor to Toxic’s domestic business, with Rs 133.90 crore net. Kannada follows with Rs 51.95 crore, while Telugu has contributed Rs 24.08 crore, Tamil Rs 9.40 crore and Malayalam Rs 2.22 crore. On Monday, the Hindi version contributed Rs 4.40 crore, Kannada earned Rs 2 crore, Telugu Rs 68 lakh, Tamil Rs 30 lakh and Malayalam Rs 7 lakh.
The Monday occupancy stood at 17.1% across 13,400 shows. Kannada recorded the highest occupancy at 27%, followed by Telugu at 20%, Hindi at 16%, Malayalam at 15% and Tamil at 13%. The sharp drop compared with the film’s massive opening-day performance has raised concerns about its ability to sustain momentum during the weekdays.
Toxic’s Rs 304.05 crore worldwide gross in six days remains a significant achievement, particularly given the film’s strong opening. However, the contrast between its Rs 101.10 crore opening day and its Rs 7.45 crore first Monday highlights the extent of the decline. The number of shows is also reducing during the weekdays, making the upcoming second weekend crucial for the film’s theatrical run.
A strong recovery over the second weekend could help Toxic regain some of its momentum and push its worldwide total significantly higher. On the other hand, if the downward trend continues, the film could face increasing pressure at the box office.
Toxic is Yash’s first major release after the blockbuster success of KGF: Chapter 2 and arrived with enormous expectations among fans and the trade. While the Rs 101.10 crore opening explained the massive anticipation surrounding the film, the sharp Monday decline has made its second weekend particularly important.
Another factor that could potentially give Toxic, produced by KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations, a fresh boost is its English-language release, which is still pending. If the English version receives a positive response after hitting theatres, it could attract a new section of audiences and provide the film with an additional push at the box office.
