The makers of the upcoming Yash starrer, Toxic, continue to face criticism for its apparent female objectification and sexism. In January this year, the visual of Yash's character having sex with a woman next to a cemetery in the teaser for the film courted criticism. At the time, its critics found the visual to be against director Geetu Mohandas' previous views about how cinema should portray romance onscreen.
The latest teaser has a visual where a female character can be seen sliding towards Yash's character. As she approaches him, the man puts a gun into her mouth. Subsequently, the voice narration describes the film as "a spectacle of men and their c***s (a vulgar term for male genitalia)."
Netizens have been coming hard on the makers of Toxic for what they deem 'sexist dialogue' and for other ways in which the film engages in female objectification.
X users are arguing that the film uses the female characters as mere sex objects, while calling out its makers for the apparent misogyny in the dialogues. Some users have taken objection to the makers for showing female characters throughout the trailer only to titillate the men. They say that this portrayal is unexpected from actor-filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, who is known for directing films such as Liar's Dice and Moothon.
Speaking of which, amidst the backlash against the film, some argue that Yash has 'ghost-directed' the film and that they do not believe that it is the product of a female filmmaker.
Some audiences also criticise the latest glimpse video for the use of the voice narration, claiming that it feels dated. According to them, the visuals of Nayanthara riding a motorcycle, accompanied by the said narration, harks back to the days of so-called 'lowbrow' films directed by Malayalam filmmaker Pramod-Pappan in the 2000s.
