Director Prem has filed a complaint against senior producer Kanakapura Srinivas following alleged derogatory remarks made at a recent film-related event. The controversy erupted after Srinivas reportedly levelled allegations against Prem, director AP Arjun, actor Darshan, a couple of producers and others, while also using offensive language against late actor Puneeth Rajkumar.

According to Prem, the remarks crossed personal and professional boundaries, prompting him to take both legal and industry-level action. The director has filed a complaint at a police station, where a Non-Cognisable Report (NCR) has been registered, and has also approached the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce regarding the issue.

Speaking to the media, Prem said he chose to respond because Srinivas allegedly made extremely offensive remarks, including comments about mothers. Prem said that while there are platforms like the Film Chamber to discuss and resolve disputes, he would not stoop to the same level of language or behaviour.

“He has spoken disrespectfully about several people, including AP Arjun, Appu (Puneeth Rajkumar), Darshan and me. To question my capability, he must first have the credibility himself. God has given me the ability to earn my livelihood. One must speak responsibly,” Prem said.

Meanwhile, Srinivas reportedly issued a strong counter statement, challenging Prem to confront him directly. He allegedly said that if Prem had the courage, he should face him in person, adding that he himself would go and meet Prem if necessary.

Prem earlier met newly elected Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president Jayamala and submitted his complaint, stating that Srinivas has made highly derogatory statements. The director confirmed that he has already approached the police before escalating the issue to the Film Chamber.

In his complaint, Prem detailed his professional association with producer Srinivas, stating that he has served the Kannada film industry for 25 years and has maintained a clean professional record. He said the producer had approached him in 2004 through KP Sreekanth, requesting him to direct a film and paid an advance of Rs 9 lakh, comprising Rs 5 lakh via cheque and Rs 4 lakh in cash.

Prem stated that he subsequently set up an office, formed a team and began working on the script. After completing the story and screenplay, he claimed that repeated attempts to contact the producer yielded no response. According to Prem, nearly a year of work by him and his team went to waste as the producer allegedly failed to provide funds for office expenses, assistant directors or team members.

Prem further stated that he personally bore office and team expenses for a year, spending a few lakhs from his own pocket. He added that he had to decline several directing opportunities from other producers during this period due to his commitment to the project, which he claims resulted in losses running into crores.

The issue is currently under review by both the police and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce.
