Could ‘Crazy Star’ V Ravichandran be preparing to swap the silver screen for the political arena?

Speculation is growing that the veteran Kannada actor-filmmaker is being considered for a seat in the Karnataka Legislative Council, with reports suggesting that Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has recommended his name. For an actor who has often maintained that cinema is the only world he knows, a move into politics would mark a significant new chapter.

Ravichandran, fondly known as the ‘Kanasugara’ the 'Crazy Star' of Kannada cinema, has enjoyed a long and influential career as an actor, filmmaker and producer. His larger-than-life films and distinctive style have earned him a devoted following over the decades.

Now, his name is reportedly being considered for a nominated seat in the Legislative Council under the arts category.

The Karnataka Legislative Council has provisions for nominating members with expertise or contributions in fields such as literature, science, art, social service and other areas of public life. If the speculation materialises, Ravichandran could enter the Council as a representative of the arts.

For his fans, the possibility has already become a reason to celebrate, with social media abuzz over the prospect of seeing the popular star take on a political role.

Adding weight to the speculation are Ravichandran’s recent interactions with DK Shivakumar.

The actor has met the Deputy Chief Minister on several occasions, including a recent meeting at Shivakumar’s residence. While there has been no official confirmation from the Congress party or the Chief Minister’s Office about Ravichandran’s nomination, the meetings have intensified talk of a possible political move.

The relationship between the two, however, appears to go beyond politics.

Shivakumar has previously described Ravichandran as a childhood friend and schoolmate. Ravichandran, too, has spoken warmly about his equation with the Congress leader.

At the recent Madduramma festival, Ravichandran spoke emotionally about Shivakumar, recalling how the politician had offered him support even before he had asked for help. The actor said Shivakumar had stood by him during a major difficulty and expressed his gratitude for the help he had received.

He also praised Shivakumar’s leadership, underlining the personal bond between the two.

That long-standing friendship has now become a talking point amid speculation that CM DK Shivakumar could be backing Ravichandran for a seat in the Council.

Ravichandran, however, has never been a conventional political figure.

Unlike several Kannada film stars who have openly entered electoral politics, the actor has largely remained within the world of cinema. He has frequently spoken about his deep connection with filmmaking and has described cinema as the one thing he truly knows.

That makes the latest speculation particularly intriguing.

CM DK Shivakumar has, in the past, spoken about recognising people who have supported him and the Congress. At a cinema-related event, he had referred to actor-director Sadhu Kokila’s association with the party and noted that he had been given an appropriate position as an academy president.

Against that backdrop, the possibility of Ravichandran being considered for an MLC nomination has generated considerable interest in both political and film circles.

For now, though, there is no official word confirming Ravichandran’s nomination.

His name being discussed does not necessarily mean that a final decision has been taken, and the speculation could remain just that until the government or Congress leadership makes an announcement.

If the nomination does come through, however, it would mark an unusual transition for one of Kannada cinema’s most recognisable personalities — from directing films and creating cinematic dreams to occupying a seat in Karnataka’s legislature.
