A group of young filmmakers has launched Sampige, a murder mystery centred on violence against women. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Giri Gowda, who previously directed several music videos and worked on projects such as Maddur Vade and Mahakali. He says the thriller aims to combine suspense with a socially relevant message.

"Sampige is a murder mystery, but it is also built around the issue of sexual violence and crimes against women. We wanted to tell a story that keeps audiences engaged while carrying a meaningful message," says Giri. The film is scheduled to go on floors in August, with a 20-day shooting schedule planned across locations including Melukote and Kannur. He also revealed that the film will feature a single song, while the female lead will be announced at a later date.

Producer Rudra Kumar describes the project as the fulfilment of a decade-long ambition. Though he runs a bread manufacturing business, cinema has remained a long-held dream.

"I have wanted to produce a film for nearly ten years. When this story came to us, I felt it was the right project to back. We are producing it under the Kalabhairaveshwara Productions banner, and I have complete faith in Giri, who is like a brother to me," he says.

Leading man Vardhan, who hails from Hassan, brings nearly eight years of experience in the industry, having worked in supporting roles as well as in the direction department before landing his first major role.

"The film revolves around the violence women face and the responsibility of society to protect them. My character is very different from anything I have done before, and we've spent considerable time rehearsing before the shoot," he says, adding that he hopes audiences will encourage emerging talent. A self-confessed admirer of actor Darshan, Vardhan also expressed his wish to have the star's blessings for the film and the team.

Actors Praveen Davanagere and Darshan, who are also part of the cast, briefly spoke about their respective roles during the launch event.

With cinematography by Keerthan Poojari, Sampige brings together a group of first-time filmmakers hoping to make an impression with a socially relevant thriller.
