Chetan Ahimsa sparks debate over Dr Rajkumar memorial land

Chetan Ahimsa's comments on the use of a public land for a memorial to the late Dr Rajkumar has triggered controversy

Actor-activist Chetan Ahimsa has triggered a sharp and ongoing debate over the memorial of Dr Rajkumar, with his statements, the backlash, and his latest clarification keeping the issue in constant focus. What began as a comment has now grown into a larger controversy.

Chetan’s remark, which quickly went viral, questioned the decision to allot 2.5 acres of prime land in central Bengaluru for Dr Rajkumar’s memorial. While acknowledging the actor’s iconic status, he argued that such valuable public land should be used based on future needs and public benefit, rather than emotion or political considerations.

The reaction was immediate and intense. Fans, pro-Kannada groups, and members of the film industry strongly opposed his statement. Protests followed, including a gherao outside his house, along with multiple police complaints, escalating the issue into a law-and-order situation.

Chetan later issued an apology, saying he regrets any hurt caused and clarifying that his intention was not to disrespect Dr Rajkumar but to raise a broader public concern.

However, he has not withdrawn his core argument. In a recent interaction, Chetan said that while he regrets the reaction, “what I said is not false,” and added that he would not bow to threats or pressure, calling such responses undemocratic. He also suggested that Dr Rajkumar himself might have declined such a large land allocation, stressing that his criticism is aimed at government decisions and “star culture,” not the individual.

He further stated that forcing an apology is wrong and that he is prepared to face legal consequences if necessary, maintaining that raising such questions is part of a democratic society.

The issue remains unresolved, evolving into a broader debate between public sentiment and practical concerns about land use and governance. While Chetan has moderated his tone, his stance continues to keep the discussion active and sensitive.
