Noted theatre artiste and actor, Raju Talikote is no more. Known for his effortless humour and earthy performances, the 59-year-old passed away following a cardiac arrest at Manipal Hospital on October 13.

Raju, who had travelled to Udupi for a film shoot, reportedly complained of chest pain earlier in the day. Despite immediate medical attention, he breathed his last around 4 pm. With his passing, Kannada theatre and cinema have lost one of their most loved and versatile performers.

Born Rajesab Muktumasab Talikote in Vijayapura district’s Talikote, Raju’s tryst with the stage began early. His parents founded the Khasgateshwara Natya Sangha, a travelling drama troupe, and by the time he was in the fourth grade, Raju had already left school to join them. Theatre became both his classroom and his calling. His play Kaliyugada Kuduka became a landmark production and earned him a name that stayed with him for life.

A former Director of Dharwad Rangayana, Raju moved from theatre to films with ease, debuting in Anand P Raju’s Hendthi Andre Hendthi. He rose to fame with Yogaraj Bhat’s Manasare and went on to appear in films like Panchrangi, Jackie, Mylari, Anjada Gandu, Veerabahu, Jungle Jackie, Topiwala and Bhajarangi among others.

Television audiences knew him as a lively contestant from Bigg Boss Kannada Season 7, where his humour and honesty won many hearts. Whether on screen or on stage, Raju carried an unmistakable warmth that could light up a scene with just a look or a laugh.

He is survived by his two wives and three children.
