Vishnuvardhan’s Abhiman Studio memorial demolished overnight amid police security

The overnight operation was carried out under heavy police presence

A Sharadhaa

The bulldozers rolled in under the cover of darkness as the memorial to Kannada cinema legend Dr Vishnuvardhan at Bengaluru’s Abhiman Studio was gone — flattened to bare earth. Though a sprawling memorial for the Sahasa Simha already stands in Mysuru, the Abhiman Studio site carried a different weight. It was here, on December 30, 2009, that the actor’s last rites were performed. For more than a decade, fans treated the ground as sacred, offering flowers and prayers at what they called Vishnu’s punyabhoomi.

The demolition followed years of tension. Fans had long fought for a permanent memorial at the site, even taking their demand to court. But the land belongs to the family of veteran actor Balakrishna, who opposed the move. Eventually, court orders left no space for sentiment; only the family or the government could decide the site’s future. With the family’s focus on Mysuru’s memorial, the outcome was inevitable.

The overnight operation was carried out under heavy police presence. Filmmaker Ravi Srivatsa, visibly emotional, streamed live from the location as earthmovers tore down the structure. “This is not what should have happened to the Yajamana’s memorial,” he said, his voice breaking.

From the Dr Vishnu Sena Samithi, Veerakaputra Srinivas called the event “the end of an 11-year fight.”

“The government couldn’t even allocate ten guntas of land for an artist of his stature. Ministers D.K. Shivakumar and Shivaraj Tangadagi promised to protect the site. We believed them. But in the end, the demolition happened in the dead of night with hundreds of police. What dignity is there in that?”

Srinivas went further, accusing Balakrishna’s heirs of planning to build a mall on the land with political backing.

“Shame on a system that treats cultural icons this way. They didn’t even have the courage to do it in daylight — they did it like cowards at night. This is a black day,” he wrote online.

For thousands of Vishnuvardhan’s admirers, Abhiman Studio was more than geography, it was a living connection to a star whose films, charisma, and generosity left a lasting mark on Kannada cinema.
