Kannada film and television actor Bank Janardhan, known for his impeccable comic timing and endearing on-screen presence, passed away in the early hours of Monday at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru. He was 76. Janardhan had been battling health issues for several days and had suffered three heart attacks in recent times. Despite intensive medical care, he breathed his last around midnight on April 13. Born in 1948 in Holalkere, a town in Karnataka's Chitradurga district, Janardhan began his professional journey far from the arc lights—as a bank employee. But even during his school and college days, he was drawn to the performing arts, particularly theatre. His dual life as a banker by profession and stage actor by passion earned him the name 'Bank Janardhan'.
His foray into cinema began in 1985 with the film Pitamaha. In the early stages of his career, roles were few and mostly minor, leaving Janardhan discouraged. At one point, he even considered leaving the film industry to return to his stable banking career. But fate had other plans.
It was director Kashinath who gave him the breakthrough of a lifetime. In the cult comedy Ajagajantara, Janardhan was cast as Bheemayya, a witty, street-smart broker. The role not only brought him recognition but also firmly established him as a comedic force in Kannada cinema. Interestingly, the role was initially considered for other actors, including Dinesh, but it was Janardhan’s screen test that convinced Kashinath. The film’s success opened new doors, and from that point on, there was no turning back.
Over the decades, Bank Janardhan became a household name across Karnataka, charming audiences with his performances in both films and television serials. His characters, often grounded and relatable, were laced with humour, wit, and warmth.
He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and a body of work that spans generations. In an industry that often forgets its supporting actors, Bank Janardhan remained unforgettable—an artist who stayed true to his roots and found his way into the hearts of millions.
He is survived by his family and fans who will remember him fondly.
