Squid Game breakout star actor Lee Jung-jae, best known for his role as Player 456 aka Seong Gi-hun in the worldwide hit Korean Netflix series, is keen on exploring in Indian cinema. In an interview with ANI, Lee Jung-jae shared, "I would love to be a part of a Bollywood film if I was given the opportunity."
The actor also recalled reprising his role for the third season and said he had "mixed feelings" when he wore the green suit again. "I also felt the same way when I put back on the red haired wig. I've worked in this industry for quite a long time but I have never felt a rush of emotions like the way I experienced on the day when I came back to the sets of Squid Game," he said.
Netflix had recently dropped all the six episodes from the latest and final season with each episode spanning almost an hour. The third season also starred Lee Byung-hun, Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Wi Ha-jun, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Jo Yu-ri, Chae Kuk-hee, Lee David, Roh Jae-won, and Jun Suk-ho, with special appearance by Park Hee-soon. Despite mixed reviews, the series is once again garnering a record viewership like its previous two seasons.
The original Squid Game series which was released in 2021, was Netflix’s most popular show of all time. It told the story of a divorced father and gambler (Lee Jung-Jae) who joins a secret competition with 456 total players. But the losers of each round are executed in the survival game until one victor remains and takes home the cash prize. The nine-episode series won three Golden Globe Awards, and received 14 Emmy nominations with six wins.
Elaborating on its success, the actor said, "I did not expect this kind of success. I think it's about timing. When Squid Game season one was released, not only were we mid-pandemic, but also I think it was the beginning of a lot of global economic struggle, unfortunately. And so many people were struggling in real life, which has been reflected in the characters in Squid Game. So I think the overall timing of the release of the show and the things that were happening around the world and how much of that was reflected in the characters was partly what led to its huge success. "
In 2023, the streamer came up with Squid Game: The Challenge which was similar to the show where participants took part in the games that were showcased on the series. Season 2 and 3 revolved around Gi-hun getting back into the games to stop it once and for all.
