Marisa Paredes, one of the iconic actors in Spanish cinema, passed away at the age of 78 in Madrid earlier today. An actor with 75 film credits, Paredes is best known for her collaborations with renowned filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. The two worked on films such as Dark Habits, High Heels, The Flower of My Secret, All About My Mother, and The Skin I Live In. The other well-known Spanish filmmakers she collaborated with include Fernando Trueba (Opera Prima), Guillermo del Toro (The Devil's Backbone), and Agustí Villaronga (In a Glass Cage).

She often considered her performance as a romantic novelist in Almodóvar's The Flower of My Secret one of the best in her career.

Spanish President Pedro Sánchez responded to the news of the actor's passing through X and conveyed his condolences to her family and loved ones. Calling her one of the most important actors that Spain has produced, Sánchez said that her presence in cinema and theater as well as commitment to democracy will be an example for future generations.

Speaking of democracy, Paredes, while serving as Spanish Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences' President, backed those who protested the endorsement for Spain's Irak invasion at the Goya Awards in 2003.

Paredes is survived by her spouse Chema Prado and daughter María Isasi.
