Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta passed away on Saturday, much to the shock of the Hindi film industry. Sanjay, who was 57 at the time of death, is best known for his 2002 film Kaante and his candid takes on films through social media. A ripoff of Quentin Tarantino’s directorial debut Reservoir Dogs (1992), Kaante stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali, and Kumar Gaurav. A moderate commercial success at the time of its release, the film had its detractors in India, although Tarantino expressed his admiration for it multiple times.

In an interaction with filmmaker and cinephile Srinivas Sunderrajan in Los Angeles once, the Reservoir Dogs filmmaker spoke enthusiastically about Sanjay Gupta's film. Saying he "loved the film," Tarantino called it "fantastic" and ranked it as one of his two favourite Reservoir Dogs ripoffs, the other being the Hong Kong thriller Too Many Ways to Be No 1.

Speaking about the best aspect of Sanjay Gupta's film, Tarantino added, "You have Indian guys, coming to US and looting a US bank. How cool is that! I was truly honored. And these Indian guys are played by the legends of Bollywood."

The Kill Bill filmmaker also specifically noted how 'amazed' he was to see character backstories fleshed out in Kaante, something the director wished he could keep in his own theatrical cut. The filmmaker added, "I felt, this isn't Reservoir Dogs. But then it goes into the warehouse scene and I am like, 'Wow, it's back to Reservoir Dogs'. Isn't it amazing!"

Quentin Tarantino even screened Sanjay's film alongside his own film original and Ringo Lam's City on Fire at his Los Angeles-based New Beverly Cinema.
