Salman Khan starrer Maatrubhumi, originally titled Battle of Galwan, ran into a rough patch earlier this year after the makers were reportedly asked by I&B ministry to change the film’s title and make a few modifications with respect to its depiction of Indo-China relations. The Maatrubhumi team is reportedly soon planning to screen their revised film for CBFC.
According to a source quoted in the Hindustan Times report, the film ‘is in the process of being viewed by the CBFC this week. There have been no other changes. Salman Khan’s films have traditionally been family entertainers, so there is little reason to anticipate major objections from the censor board.’ The source also said that the Maatrubhumi makers are aiming at a Diwali release after an official approval from CBFC, a week after the release of Ranbir Kapoor-Yash starrer Ramayana: Rise of a Legend.
While earlier there were reports of Maatrubhumi going for reshoots to get rid of its anti-China stance and show the country in a positive light, a few other recent reports stated that the film was never halted by government, and that reports suggesting otherwise are merely speculative.
Produced by Salma Khan under the banner of Salman Khan Films, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest In Peace is directed by Apoorva Lakhia and also stars Chitrangada Singh in a pivotal role. Based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops, the film reportedly dropped all references to China after reshoots, the film was originally slated for release in April this year.
Apoorva Lakhia has previously directed films like Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost (2003), Ek Ajnabee (2005), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) and Haseena Parkar (2017). Maatrubhumi marks his first collaboration with Salman.
