Family and close friends from the Hindi film industry bid a tearful adieu to filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for films such as Kaante (2002), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) and Kaabil (2017), in Mumbai on late Saturday evening.

Sanjay (59) died following an accidental fall at his residence on Friday night.

His mortal remains were brought to his house in Versova from hospital in an ambulance. They were then carried to the crematorium in the same ambulance which was decked with white flowers.

The last rites were concluded at around 8.30 pm at the Versova crematorium ground. The funeral pyre was lit by Sanjay’s son Shivansh and daughter Dalai.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who was present at the funeral, said it was an emotional moment for Sanjay’s friends from the industry.

"It is an emotional moment for all of us. He will be dearly missed. He was a fun-loving person and suddenly he has disappeared. His untimely demise is a shock, it will take time to sink in. We've lost so many people recently from the industry and everyone's contribution has been immense," Ashoke told PTI.

Close friends from the industry including Milap Zaveri, Ronit Roy, Rohit Roy and Mansi Joshi Roy seemed inconsolable.

Apart from Ashoke, actors Abhishek Bachchan, Rajpal Yadav, Rajat Bedi and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan were among those seen at the crematorium.

Those who visited Sanjay’s residence included Manoj Bajpayee, Fardeen Khan, Sonu Sood, Harshvardhan Rane, Manu Rishi, Gulshan Grover, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and Farah Khan.

In a statement on Saturday, Mumbai Police said Sanjay died around midnight on Friday after falling inside his house and suffering a head injury that led to excessive bleeding.

"His wife, two children, and a domestic helper lived with him. However, as everyone was asleep, the incident came to light this morning. The family has no suspicion or complaint," the police said in a statement.

"A post-mortem examination was conducted. An inquiry into the accidental death is underway by the Versova Police Station," it added.
