The opening match of the 2026 Indian Premier League between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) delivered plenty of on-field excitement, but it was a light-hearted off-field moment involving Anushka Sharma that truly captured the internet’s attention.
Clips doing the rounds on X showed Anushka reacting with laughter after Virat Kohli missed what seemed like a routine catch late in the game. The candid moment instantly struck a chord with fans, who flooded social media with memes, dubbing it “peak cinema.”
The incident unfolded in the 18th over, bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. SRH batter Aniket Verma mistimed a shot, sending the ball towards long-on where Kohli charged in to complete the catch. In an uncharacteristic lapse for one of India’s most dependable fielders, the ball slipped through his hands, brushed his thigh, and dropped. Kohli’s immediate reaction reflected his own disbelief at the missed opportunity.
Moments later, the broadcast cut to the stands, where Anushka was seen laughing at the turn of events. A reaction that fans found instantly relatable and endearing. RCB ended up wining the match against SRH by 6 wickets.
Away from the viral moment, RCB marked the occasion with a heartfelt tribute ahead of the match. The franchise reserved 11 seats at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in memory of fans who lost their lives in the 2025 stampede, a gesture that received widespread appreciation online.
Coming into the season as defending champions after clinching their maiden IPL title in 2025, RCB carry significant expectations, with Kohli continuing to be one of the team’s biggest draws.
On the personal front, Anushka has been largely away from the screen, focusing on family life with her children, Vamika and Akaay. Her last theatrical release remains the 2018 film Zero, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. She was also set to return with the sports biopic Chakda Xpress, based on the life of Jhulan Goswami. Despite generating early buzz, the project is yet to receive a release date.
