The official trailer of Taapsee Pannu starrer Assi was unveiled on Wednesday afternoon. The courtroom drama is set for a theatrical release on February 20.

The plot of Assi revolves around a case of sexual assault that takes place in the heart of a bustling city. As the investigation proceeds and the case arrives in court, what remains laid bare is the whole rotten system at work — be it bureaucratic hurdles, corruption, misuse of legal framework, or internalised misogyny. Taapsee Pannu plays a determined and fierce lawyer who must battle many forces bigger than her, all at once, to get justice for the survivor.

The film borrows its title from the number of rape and seexual assault cases that get reported every day, out of which nearly 90 percent don’t even see a courtroom trial. The primary cast of Assi features many stellar actors in key roles, like Kani Kusruti, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak and Seema Pahwa.

Assi comes from filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, who has previously made many socially-conscious dramas like Article 15, Mulk, Thappad, and Anek. Two of them — Thappad and Mulk — featured Taapsee as the lead figure. Anubhav has also written the script in collaboration with Gaurav Solanki, who is known for works like Taandav and the unreleased Dibakar Banarjee film Tees

Key technicians include Ewaqn Mulligan as the cinematographer, Amarjit Singh as the editor, and Nikhil S Kovale and Apurva Vijay Bhagat co-helming production designer. Addiitonally, notable composer Ranjit Barot returns to Hindi cinema after a long time, onboard as a background composer for this film.

Assi is produced by Benaras Mediaworks and presented by T-Series. .
