Emraan Hashmi’s romantic-actioner Awarapan 2 is going strong in its first week at the box office. The Nitin Kakkar directorial made over Rs 80 crore in its first weekend. The collections expectedly dipped on Monday to Rs 9.25 crore (from Rs 26 crore the previous day) but the numbers remained stable on Tuesday with the film making Rs 9.75 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk.

The film’s net domestic total now stands at Rs 100.75 cr. The film has earned Rs 144.13 crore worldwide. This has made Awarapan 2 the first solo film in Emraan’s career of 18 years to enter Rs 100-crore club.

On day 5, Awarapan 2 recorded an overall theatre occupancy of 28.24 percent across 11,000 shows. Morning shows recorded 12.15 percent occupancy, followed by 25.54 percent in the afternoon and 29.46 percent in the evening, while night shows saw a 43 percent occupancy.

Awarapan 2 has had a more favourable fate than its predecessor. The 2007 original, directed by Mohit Suri, although became a cult favourite over the years but when it released it could only amass a lifetime collection of Rs 7.75 crore. The sequel surpassed the first part’s lifetime earnings in just a few hours. The film has also maintained a significant lead over Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947, which also released on the same day (August 14) and has collected Rs 30.75 crore net in India so far.

When it comes to critics’ response, Awarapan 2 received a mixed bag. The film was appreciated for playing on the nostalgia but the story itself was less engaging for many. CE’s review of the film read: “Awarapan 2 stands on its own, eventhough its stance is wobbly. For the millennials there is a lot to cheer for. Hashmi is back in his brood, sporting rexine jackets over black vests. The Bangkok nightlife is gritty, grimy and neon-nostalgic, but what is missing is the depth of Shivam’s angst.”

The film also features Shabana Azmi, Suvinder Vicky, Disha Patani, Puran Gabbi, and Vijayant Kohli, amongst others.
