We had previously reported about the makers of 1994 film 1942: A Love Story planning a grand re-release for their film. On Wednesday, the team confirmed August 21 as the re-release date for the film. 1942: A Love Story will return to the big screen, now meticulously restored in 8K with remastered 5.1 surround sound, in theatres across the country. PVR-Inox is organising the re-release in association with Vinod Chopra Films.
Featuring Manisha Koirala, Anil Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff in the lead cast, the film unfolds against the backdrop of India's freedom movement, seamlessly blending its tender portrayal of love with the spirit of rebellion, weaving together romance, idealism, and patriotism into an unforgettable cinematic experience.
The restoration has been undertaken in collaboration with Prasad Labs, India, and L'Immagine Ritrovata, Bologna, Italy, one of the world's leading film restoration facilities. 1942: A Love Story was also the first Hindi film to have a Dolby Stereo Sound.
Reflecting on the challenges he first faced during the initial release in 1994, Vidhu Vinod Chopra said, "When the film was first released, India was not still equipped with a proper Dolby surround sound. Even colour grading had limitations. This was the first film in India that was made in Dolby and Dolby was brought to India by us. I had mixed the film in London. They told us that Dolby can even play in a mono theatre. We brought it back, but no cinema hall was ready to play Dolby. We laid the special imported cables and installed surround sound speakers in Metro. That's how the film first played properly in Dolby. Then I went to Jaipur, where the lines of Jaggu and bomb explosions were not audible, because Dolby sound was still running in mono. Now, one can truly experience the sound as it was meant to be and see the colour palette, as visualized by the cinematographer and the director."
1942: A Love Story was also the much-celebrated swansong of legendary music director RD Burman, who passed away months before the release of the film. Javed Akhtar penned the memorable songs in the film. Also featuring Anupam Kher, and Danny Denzongpa, the film has a story by Kamna Chandra, Shiv Kumar Subramaniam, and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, alongside a screenplay written by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shiv Kumar Subramaniam, and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
