After getting critical acclaim but a dismal commercial response, Kanu Behl’s psychological-drama Agra is finally getting an OTT release. The film, which released in theatres on November 14 last year, will start streaming on Prime Video from April 17.

“After the fight for screens and a successful theatrical run, Agra has found it’s way on OTT! Agra releasing on Amazon Prime Video on 17th April!” Kanu wrote on Instagram as he made the announcement.

Starring debutant Mohit Agarwal, Priyanka Bose, Rahul Roy and Vibha Chibber, among others, Agra tells the story of Guru (Mohit), a sex-crazed young man, who lives with his mother on the ground floor of a dilapidated house. On the upper floor lives his father (Rahul Roy) with his second wife. Psychologically tormented due to growing up in a broken family, Guru dreams of building another room for himself and his future wife on the top floor. The film deals with trauma, desire and how a single room becomes a motif for both urban development and destruction.

Agra was given a very limited release in Indian theatres. 46 Indian filmmakers, including Nandita Das, Vasan Bala, Payal Kapadia, Varun Grover and Honey Trehan, among others, had penned a joint statement lamenting the fact that there weren’t many platforms left for independent films in the country.

Filmmakers had pointed out the long-standing practice of limiting films like Agra to sparse showtimes, with morning or weekend-only screenings, frequent cancellations, and other constraints. They also criticised OTT platforms for insisting that such films “prove themselves” in theatres before being considered for digital release.

The statement ultimately called for fairer showtimes, programming transparency, dedicated cycles to showcase independent cinema, greater support from both public and private exhibitors, and parity in OTT acquisitions.
