Veteran singer Asha Bhosle, known for her versatile voice, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday. She was 92.
As per news agency ANI, her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the report. Anand told reporters outside Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where Bhosle was admitted since Saturday evening. “She passed away today. Those who wish to pay their last respects can visit her residence tomorrow at 11 am. The last rites will be performed tomorrow (Monday) at 4 pm at Shivaji Park.”
Earlier it was reported that Bhosle has been admitted to the ICU ward of Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital after she suffered from extreme exhaustion and chest infection.
Her granddaughter granddaughter Zanai Bhosle had taken to X and posted. "My grandmother, Asha Bhosle due to extreme exhaustion and suffering a chest infection has been admitted to hospital and we request you to value our privacy. Treatment is ongoing and hopefully everything will be well and we shall update you positively."
Bhosle came from the musically prominent Mangeshkar family. Her sister was the late Lata Mangeshkar and their father was Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, who was also an actor and a classical singer on the Marathi musical stage.
Bhosle started her career with singing in low-budget films. Her big break came with B.R. Chopra’s Naya Daur (1957) in which she sang duets with Mohammed Rafi like ‘Maang Ke Saath Tumhara’, ‘Saathi Haath Badhana’ and ‘Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri’. She was known for her modern, party voice and her songs from Teesri Manzil (1966), also sung with Rafi, like ‘Aaja Aaja’, ‘O Haseena Zulfonwali’ and ‘O Mere Sona Re’ gave her more popularity. Her other well-known songs are ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’, ‘Yeh Mera Dil’, ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’, ‘Mera Kuchh Saamaan’, ‘Tanha Tanha’ and ‘Rangeela’.
