Veteran actor Dharmendra passed away on Monday (November 24) due to age-related ailments. The celebrated star was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on October 31 but was later discharged on November 12 and was receiving treatment at home. When he was in hospital his condition deteriorated many times leading the media to speculate on his well-being.

He breathed his last earlier on Monday and was laid to rest at the Pawan Hans crematorium in the presence of close friends and family.

As per a latest development, the actor will not be receiving state honours at his funeral. This has come as a surprise to his fans as Dharmendra was active in films since 1960s and is also known for giving the most number of hits. He was also elected the Member of the Lok Sabha from the ruling BJP in 2004. Dharmendra was also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan.

Interestingly, the last actor to receive the state funeral was veteran star Manoj Kumar, who was cremated with full state honours in Mumbai on April 5, 2025. His funeral included a three-gun salute and his body draped in the national flag.

What are state honours and how is the decision made?

A state funeral is a ceremonial event organised to honour prominent individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation. These funerals often include elaborate arrangements, such as military honours, a gun salute, and the draping of the coffin or body with the national flag.

The eligibility for receiving a state funeral is decided by a combination of historical precedent, legal guidelines, and discretionary powers exercised by government officials. The decision to bestow a state funeral is taken by the government, by taking into account the individual’s stature and contributions. The Chief Minister must consult with senior cabinet members and other officials to evaluate the eligibility of the deceased. The decision also reflect public sentiment and the individual’s impact on society.
