The trailer of Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa starrer Phule was released by the makers on Monday. In the film, directed by Ananth Mahadevan, Pratik and Patralekhaa essay the roles of social activists Jyotirao and Savitri Bai Phule, respectively.

The trailer shows Jyotirao and Savitri Bai fight for women’s right to education. Pratik’s Jyotirao also seeks to free the masses from a slavery that precedes the British Raj: the shackles of the caste system. As they mobilise the underprivileged castes, the dominant caste members get perturbed. In a scene, Patralekhaa’s Savitri Bai announces that their mission is to ensure that the underprivileged are not termed as “shudra” but “dalit”. The trailer ends with Jyotirao saying an ominous dialogue: “Our country is a sentimental one. Here, it’s easy to make people fight against each other in the name of caste and religion. This will happen in the future too. Make sure the fire of revolution keeps on burning.”

Phule is backed by Dancing Shiva Productions’ Ritesh Kudecha, Anuya Chauhan Kudecha and Pranay Chokshi. It is scheduled to release in theatres on April 11.
