Earlier this Tuesday, Ajay Devgn wished his Son of Sardaar co-star Sanjay Dutt on his birthday. The actor took to his Instagram Stories, shared a still from their 2012 film and wrote, "Mera bhai and the best costar to work with." He went on to add, "Lucked out with you baba," suggesting that he is fortunate to have worked with Sanjay. Despite clashing with the late Yash Chopra's swansog, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif, Son of Sardaar performed well at the box office. According to Sacnilk data, it grossed 150 crore at the worldwide box office.

Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt have a long history of collaborations, having worked together in multiple films before Son of Sardaar. Their joint filmography includes Rascals, All The Best, Mehbooba, Tango Charlie, LOC Kargil, and Raju Chacha. Sanjay Dutt also served as the narrator for Ajay's film Toonpur Ka Super Hero.

Sanjay Dutt was initially slated to reprise his role as Balwinder "Billu" Singh Sandhu in Son of Sardaar 2. However, he is not part of the main cast in the sequel primarily due to the rejection of his UK visa application. The UK authorities reportedly denied his visa application because of his past incarceration related to the 1993 Bombay bombings. While there were initial reports that he might still be part of some India-based portions, actor-politician Ravi Kishan has stepped in to replace Sanjay for the film. Sanjay Dutt himself expressed that it would have been fun to reunite with Ajay Devgn for Son of Sardaar 2, hinting at his disappointment with the situation.
