Mohit Suri's return to the romantic genre with Saiyaara is on the roadpath to becoming a major profitable venture for the filmmaker as the film, headlined by newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has registered a historic opening for a debutant film, minting Rs 21.25 crore across India.
The signs were evident earlier, as Saiyaara recorded the second-highest ticket sales in advance bookings, thanks to all the buzz it created on social media despite the film going for minimal promotions and keeping the lead actors away from the media. Director Mohit Suri learnt the tactic from his 2013 romantic-drama, Aashiqui 2.
Upon release on Friday, the film broke multiple records including becoming the first film to record highest opening day ticket sales post-2000 for a debutant film, most tickets sold on Day 1 for a debutant film in 25 years — since Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai and Refugee (2000) and became a big boost for director Mohit Suri as it was the best opening of his career. The makers reportedly achieved these numbers with just 8,000 shows across India.
Our CE review of the film read, "After the debacle of Ek Villain Returns (2022), it’s good to witness Suri swing at his home ground of young romance. Saiyaara is an ode to spirited, young, rebellious love and manages to steer clear of getting into the arena of social media or dating apps."
Ahaan is the cousin of Ananya Panday. He was signed as a YRF Talent almost about six years back to go through intense training programmes devised personally by Aditya. neet, on the other hand, previously featured in the series Big Girls Don’t Cry (2024). Rohan Shankar had penned the dialogues for Saiyaara. It is the first film backed by YRF’s CEO, Akshaye Widhani. It is presented by Aditya Chopra.
