Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 1994 flick, 1942: A Love Story, is set to rerelease in theatres on January 16, 2026. The film, headlined by Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala, is set to be released theatrically, in the new 8K restored format.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra wrote and directed the film which chronicles the romance between Narendra Singh (Anil Kapoor) and Rajeshwari Pathak (Manisha Koirala), in the sunset years of the British Empire. Naren's family are staunch British supporters, while Rajjo's family consists or revolutionaries fighting the British. As hurdles get in the way, Naren has to fight to prove his love for Rajjo.
1942 was also one of RD Burman's posthomous releases, with the soundtrack being well received by the audiences. Javed Akhtar wrote lyrics for the film.
The cast of the film also included Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa, Pran, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Brian Glover.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who would go on to make his directorial debut with Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), was amongst the writing team, that penned the screenplay.
