Hansal Mehta's series Gandhi, starring Pratik Gandhi in the titular role, is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. Earlier this Thursday, composer AR Rahman made the announcement about the series while sharing a photograph featuring Pratik clad in full white clothing. Speaking of which, the series' first season will explore young Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's time as a student of law in London as well as a lawyer cum civil rights leader in South Africa.
The Applause Entertainment production is the first series from India to be chosen in the primetime slate at TIFF. Gandhi reunites Pratik and Hansal with Applause Entertainment after their popular series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story on SonyLIV. The production banner Applause Entertainment's Chief Executive Officer Sameer Nair recently told Variety that Gandhi would complement the 1982 Richard Attenborough directorial of the same name. It is an adaptation of the books Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World, 1914-1948 and Gandhi Before India written by historian Ramachandra Guha.
Hansal told Variety that, with Gandhi, the attempt is not to portray him as a God-like figure but rather to humanise him. There have been multiple other films based on the Father of the Nation, most notably Shyam Benegal's 1996 film The Making of the Mahatma as well as Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan's 2000 film Hey Ram.
Production on Gandhi Season 1 has reportedly been completed and is set to release later this year. Meanwhile, the 50th Toronto International Film Festival is set to take place from September 4 to 14 this year.
