Joseph Gordon-Levitt has praised Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi at an event recently. He said that he watched the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial and felt that it was like a Martin Scorsese movie in some ways.
In a conversation with Rajkummar Rao at IFP Season 14 in Mumbai on Saturday, Joseph said, “I was just watching that movie and found it so unique and beautiful – completely different than really anything I had seen. It was this very heavy, distinguished drama that felt almost like a (Martin) Scorsese movie at times. But then there are these gorgeous musical numbers that felt so sincere and well crafted.
He added, “I found myself completely enamored with this film. It made me want to learn more and more about Indian cinema. It's honestly part of why I wanted to come here. I love what I am feeling about the culture here. There's such a genuine love for movies and artistry, and I want to come here and make a movie in India. I would really love to do that.”
The actor is on his first visit to India and was part of the opening session at the event titled, ‘On Mastering the Art of Embodying a Character & Building HitRecord’. He is known for working in films like 500 Days of Summer (2009), Inception (2010), Looper (2012), Snowden (2016), Don Jon (2013), and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024).
