After a video of two Kuki women being paraded naked in Manipur amidst violence in the state went viral on social media, actors Akshay Kumar, Richa Chadha, Renuka Shahane and Vir Das have reacted to the horrifying clip.
The video shows two women, one in her 20s and the other in 40s, being made to walk naked down a road and towards a field by a group of men who are groping them. As per reports, one woman was also gang-raped by the mob.
Stating that he was “disgusted” to see the video, Akshay wrote, “Shaken, disgusted to see the video of violence against women in Manipur. I hope the culprits get such a harsh punishment that no one ever thinks of doing a horrifying thing like this again.”
Richa Chadha expressed her anger and quote-tweeted the news on the violence with the comment, “Shameful! Horrific! Lawless!”
Renuka Shahane also took to Twitter and wrote, “Is there no one to stop the atrocities in Manipur? If you are not shaken to the core by that disturbing video of two women, is it even right to call oneself human, let alone Bharatiya or Indian!”
Comedian-actor Vir Das questioned the silence of political leaders and the media over the incident. “When horrific incidents occur make no mistake, through the system, our leaders are IMMEDIATELY aware. When months later videos go viral, twitter is aware. If leaders only then respond, it’s to twitter, not horrific incidents. They care about online outrage, not real people.”
“It takes twitter 2 days to do a job that 10-15 major news channels employing thousands and worth billions, couldn't do for 76. What a shame,” he wrote in another tweet.
Manipur has been under the grip of violence between the Meitei and the Kuki communities. The said incident occurred earlier this year in May when the violence first erupted.
