The first look trailer for Ari Aster’s upcoming film Beau is Afraid has been released online. The trailer shows us that the film is a blend of colourful and surreal imagery along with the dark themes that Aster is known for. Beau is Afarid, formerly titled Disappointment Blvd, stars Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.

The trailer tells us that the film is centered around Phoneix’s character and what seems to be a psychological exploration into his relationship with his mom and his ongoing battle with depression through various stages of his life. The cast of the film also includes Parker Posey, Zoe Lister-Jones, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Denis Ménochet, Hayley Squires, and Michael Gandolfini. 

Aster is best known for exploring psychological themes, often through the lens of the horror genre. His critically acclaimed works include Hereditary and Midsommar. Meanwhile, Phoenix is currently attached to star in the sequel to Todd Philips’ Joker. Beau is Afraid is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on 24 April.
