Hunger Games fame filmmaker Francis Lawrence is set to direct the adaptation of Pierce Brown's sci-fi book series Red Rising. The book series’ first instalment is being developed as a feature film.

Lawrence will be directing the film from a screenplay by Justin Rhodes, known for Terminator: Dark Fate and Secret Level.

The book follows Darrow, a "Red" miner on Mars, who goes on to discover that the ruling "Gold" caste is enslaving his people. He joins a rebellion group to overthrow the colour-based hegemony after he infiltrates the Gold society.

Coming off the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, Lawrence is known for helming the five Hunger Games films. His sixth directorial venture in the franchise, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is set for a release on November 20. Lawrence's credits also include Constantine (2005), Water for Elephants (2011), and Red Sparrow (2018).

The Red Rising adaptation is produced by Lawrence, Cameron MacConomy, and Francesco Goedhuis, with author Brown serving as an executive producer.
