On Friday, Universal Pictures announced The Mummy: The Book of the Dead as the official title of its upcoming fourth instalment in the longstanding action-fantasy adventure franchise. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a David Coggeshall screenplay, The Mummy 4 stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the lead roles. It brings Fraser and Weisz back together in their iconic roles as Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, respectively, after their collaboration on 1999's The Mummy and its 2001 sequel.
It is worth noting that Weisz did not feature in the third part of the franchise, 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Maria Bello replaced her as Evelyn Carnahan. The broader franchise also has a spinoff, 2002's The Scorpion King, starring Dwayne Johnson, and a 2017 reboot featuring Tom Cruise in the lead role.
The Mummy: The Book of the Dead also stars John Hannah, Numan Acar, Michael Johnston, Oded Fehr, and Kevin J O’Connor.
Also called Radio Silence, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are known for helming Ready or Not (2019) and Scream (2022). On the other hand, writer Coggeshall is known for Orphan: First Kill (2022) and The Family Plan (2023).
The upcoming film is produced by franchise veteran Sean Daniel. Notably, Daniel has also served as a producer on 2017's The Mummy, whose failure reportedly ended Universal Pictures' plan to create an interlinked 'Dark Universe'.
Coming back to The Mummy 4, the upcoming film's producers also include James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak of the Project X Entertainment banner, as well as Clayton Townsend. Besides starring in the film's lead role, Brendan Fraser serves as an executive producer as well, alongside Jason F Brown of the company Hivemind.
The makers of the film have been keeping plot specifics under wraps, although production on it is underway. It is set for an October 15, 2027, release.
