James Gunn appears to have little interest in slowing down. Even as his next DC film moves through post-production, the filmmaker is already working on the screenplay for what comes after it, although he has not revealed what that project is.
The update comes at an interesting point in the development of Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Gunn has wrapped filming on the sequel and is currently overseeing its post-production, with the film still nearly a year away from its theatrical release. The filmmaker has now confirmed that he has already moved on to writing his next feature.
Gunn revealed the development on Threads after a fan asked whether he was ready to begin writing his next film or was waiting. “Already in it. I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!!” he responded. The comment came shortly after Gunn confirmed that the assembly cut of Man of Tomorrow was complete.
An assembly cut is an early stage of the editing process in which the filmed material is put together in sequence, allowing the filmmaker to assess the overall shape and pacing of the movie before the more detailed stages of editing, visual effects and sound work. What Gunn is writing next, however, remains a mystery. No title or project has been officially attached to the screenplay, and the filmmaker has not indicated whether it is another DCU film or something outside the franchise.
The possibility of another DC project is certainly there. Gunn had previously said that he already knew which films he wanted to direct after Man of Tomorrow, describing them as part of a larger DCU story. He had also suggested that he expected to direct “a couple more” projects, depending on how long he could sustain the workload.
For now, his immediate priority remains Superman: Man of Tomorrow. The film brings back David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with the two characters expected to find themselves forced into an uneasy alliance against a larger threat. Lars Eidinger is set to play Brainiac, while Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane.
The sequel also expands the new DCU's roster, with Milly Alcock returning as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl and Aaron Pierre appearing as John Stewart/Green Lantern following his introduction in Lanterns. Other returning cast members include Skyler Gisondo, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to reach theatres on July 9, 2027. Gunn is both writing and directing the film, continuing the Superman story he began with the 2025 film that launched the new DCU's theatrical universe.
