Wonka filmmaker Paul King to direct Labubu feature film

Labubu will be a live-action and CGI film

Sony Pictures and Pop Mart officially announced at a Paris event celebrating the tenth anniversary of the monster universe that a feature animated project based on the Labubu toyline is at an early development stage. The film will be helmed by Wonka director Paul King. The creator of the toyline, Kasing Lung, revealed that the filmmaker will pen the screenplay with Tony Award-winning writer Steven Levenson. The film's storyline has not been shared yet. Labubu will be a live-action and CGI film. It will be produced by King, Michael Schaefer and Wenxin She, while Kasing Lung will serve as executive producer. Brittany Morrissey is set to oversee the film's production for the studio. ​

Paul King served as a writer and director of notable films, such as Paddington (2014) and Wonka (2023). He received multiple nominations at the BAFTA Film Awards for his work in film and television, including The Mighty Boosh (2007). 

On the other hand, Steven Levenson is best known for his Tony award win for his book, Dear Evan Hansen. He also penned the screenplay for Tick, Tick... Boom! (2021).
