HBO dropped the first official teaser for its upcoming series Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre of Rebel Ridge fame, on Wednesday. There is hardly any superhero stuff in the teaser, even as it acknowledges the show's Green Lantern foundation. The makers of the series, based on the characters in DC Comics, recently called it a realistic show, comparing it to True Detective. At least, this appears to be the case, especially going by the latest Lanterns teaser.
The series stars Hal Jordan, a Green Lantern Corps member who trains new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as he is about to take retirement. While there are references to the corporation, including the Green Lantern ring, in the teaser, the show follows a murder set in the most central part of the USA.
The series also stars Kelly Macdonald in the role of a police officer looking into the murder. Ulrich Thomsen, Garret Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan are part of the cast as well.
With the teaser, the makers also revealed that Lanters is slated for an August release on HBO Max. Chris Mundy of Ozark fame serves as an executive producer and the showrunner. Also serving as the executive producers are writers and co-creators Tom King and Damon Lindelof, in addition to DC Studios' heads Peter Safran and James Gunn, and James Hawes and Ron Schmidt. Notably, Hawes and Schmidt directed the pilot and the second episode of the show. The other directors include Geeta Vasant Patel, Alik Sakharov, and Stephen Williams.
