Weeks after beating the record of becoming the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, Michael has now earned the coveted position of winning the highest-grossing biopic of all time, grossing $977 million globally.

The Michael Jackson biopic, starring his niece Jaafar Jackson in the lead, has surpassed Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer to reach the milestone. Oppenheimer as a previous record-holder, earned $975 million globally, marking a remarkable total for an R-rated historical drama.

It was only recently that Michael surpassed 2018's Bohemian Rhapsody and ranked as the biggest musical biopic of all time. Currently, the film has minted $607.2 million overseas and $370.2 million in the US since April. It is now just a few million short of the milestone $1 billion mark.

Michael is directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan. It follows the life of the American singer Michael Jackson, covering his involvement in the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to the 1980s Bad tour.

The supporting features Colman Domingo and Nia Long playing Jackson’s parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson; Miles Teller appearing as John Branca, the singer’s long-time advisor and attorney; Larenz Tate portraying Motown legend Berry Gordy; Laura Harrier playing music executive Suzanne de Passe; and Kat Graham appearing as Diana Ross.

Besides the latest record, Michael is also Lionsgate's highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing 2013's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The studio is expected to greenlight another film on Jackson.
