Recently, Patton Oswalt, who voiced Remy the rat with culinary skills in Ratatouille, expressed interest in reprising his role in a potential sequel if it were to ever take place. Ever since, there has been renewed interest in the sequel for the well-loved animated film, even though 19 years have passed.
Speaking at the Obsessed podcast, Oswalt jumped at the idea of a Ratatouille sequel, saying, "Obviously, I’d love if there was a Ratatouille sequel," laying down just one condition. "If he gets an idea, that’s the one I want to do," he added, referring to the film's director Brad Bird having to be at the helm.
For the unversed, Ratatouille tells the story of Remy, a foodie rat whose ambition is to become a chef at Auguste Gusteau's restaurant in Paris. He befriends garbage boy Alfredo Linguini in an attempt to achieve his goal. Lou Romance lent his voice for Linguini.
Director Brad Bird was recently asked about the sequel, and his response has given fans only the option of rewatching Ratatouille time and again. In an interview with Collider, Bird clearly declined the idea of Ratatouille 2 and said, "No, I don't," when he was asked if he had any interest in developing a continuation for the story.
Bird also confirmed that Pixar is still interested in the idea. He said, “They’ve made little feints towards that to see how I would react. They’ll, like, crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like, ‘Would you?’" But Bird is clear about his stance, as he added, "And I’m like, ‘No, we told that story.'”
The Incredibles filmmaker also shared his two cents on the sequel culture. "Any time you do something that ends up connecting with people, they automatically think, ‘How about another?'" He recalled how he was asked for a continuation for his 1999 film, The Iron Giant. "People have mentioned it about The Iron Giant, which is hilarious to me because the film didn’t succeed at all in its initial release. It’s caught up in time, but what would you do to follow that up? He’s lumbering around, still undiscovered?" he said, adding that to him the story was already told.
Also featuring a voice cast comprising Ian Holm, Janeane Garofalo, Peter O’Toole and Brad Garrett, Ratatouille globally earned $620 million ($1 billion today). The film received 5 Oscar nominations and won Best Animated Feature.
