Netflix, on its Annecy International Animation Film Festival presentation, announced that its upcoming noir sci-fi animated film, Ray Gunn, will debut digitally on December 18. The first look and concept art of the film were also unveiled during the announcement.
Ray Gunn, Brad Bird's long-awaited film, follows private sleuth Raymond Gunn in an alternate 1939 Metropia. Gunn sets off to investigate a case involving aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova. Produced by Skydance Animation, the film's voice cast is led by Sam Rockwell (as Ray Gunn), Scarlett Johansson (as Venus Nova), and Tom Waits (as Ray's alien colleague Eyera). Bird directed the film from a screenplay he wrote along with Matthew Robbins.
Bird has made a name for himself in the animation world, helming films like The Iron Giant (1999), The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille (2007), and The Incredibles 2 (2018). He has also directed live-action films like Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and Tomorrowland (2015).
Rockwell, known for leading Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), Moon (2009), and Richard Jewell (2019), has also starred in Charlie's Angels (2000), Frost/Nixon (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), and Jojo Rabbit (2019). He was last seen in Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die (2025). His upcoming films include Wild Horse Nine. Johansson, who last appeared in James Gray's Paper Tiger, is a part of big-ticket films like the seventh installment from The Exorcist franchise, helmed by Mike Flanagan, and The Batman: Part II.
