At the ongoing Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it was announced that a new film based on The Powerpuff Girls is in development. While the further details on the upcoming film hasn't been revealed yet, Warner Bros Pictures Animation hasn't confirmed a deal yet, with the project in development going ahead without a greenlight, reported Variety.
The Powerpuff Girls were created by Craig McCracken and premiered on television in 1998. The three Powerpuff Girls, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, are five year olds who gain superpowers after their creator, Professor Utonium, accidentally adds Chemical X, along with a mixture of sugar, spice, and everything nice.
While fighting crime in their hometown of Townsville, they are often pitted against Mojo Jojo, a chimpanzee. Cathy Cavadini, Tara Strong, and EG Daily originally voiced Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, respectively.
In 2002, an animated film adaptation titled The Powerpuff Girls Movie was released featuring the voices of Cavadini, Strong, and Daily. Later a live-action adaptation was in development, in 2020, which was later cancelled in 2023.
Apart from the upcoming The Powerpuff Girls adaptation, Warner Bros Picture Animation's upcoming slate includes The Cat in The Hat, Bad Fairies, Margie Claus, Oh The Place You'll Go!, Dynamic Duo, Hello Kitty, and The Lunar Chronicles.
