Nearly three decades after Jim Carrey gave an award-winning performance as the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the actor is in talks for returning for the sequel which has been made official by Universal and Imagine Entertainment.
Director Ron Howard, who directed the original is coming back to helm the upcoming film as well along with producer Brian Grazer, the co-founder of Imagine.
If things go well, Alec Berg, known for Barry and Silicon Valley, would be writing the script with Jeff Schaffer (Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness; Dave; Curb Your Enthusiasm) and David Mandel (Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm). Interestingly, the trio had already worked together on another Dr. Seuss' adaptation The Cat in the Hat, headlined by Mike Myers.
Released in 2000, How the Grinch Stole Christmas revolved around the Grinch, a grumpy and curmudgeonly recluse who despised Christmas and the cheerful residents of Whoville. It triumphed at the box office with a whopping $351 million in revenue, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2000 domestically. Carrey's performance earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Scenes from the film continue to emerge in pop culture discourses, GIFs and memes included, even today.
Speaking about reprising his role as the Grinch, Carrey, in an interview in 2024, spoke about how he pulled off the role with tons of makeup where he could "hardly breathe". He called it "an extremely excruciating process." "The children were in my mind all the time. 'It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.' And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world," he said, opening up on the possibilities of coming back for a sequel.
Besides this, another adaptation came in 2018 titled The Grinch, which was also a major hit at the box office.
